A musician
most of her life, RoJean began studying piano and flute during elementary school
years, sang in church and school choirs, and continued her involvement in music
activities into adulthood.
A midlife encounter with harp compelled her to find a folk harp of her own. Playing the harp soon became a career focus, as RoJean
learned firsthand the calming effects of harp music for herself and for others.
She completed
certification requirements with MHTP
(the Music for Healing and Transition Program), interning in Salina (KS) Regional Health Center’s
skilled care nursing department.
Currently, she
provides therapeutic music for clients with Hospice of Salina,
maintains a private teaching studio, and enjoys playing her harp for weddings,
church services, memorials, banquets, festivals, and a variety of other events.
Her experience
expressing music on the harp has inspired RoJean to compose,
record, and
publish her
music, with the help of Horizons Developing Artists grants
through Salina’s Arts & Humanities Commission. A subsequent grant enabled her
to study with Canadian Lynne Reid, who teaches the harp by ear; that
experience led her to Ireland for a week of study with Janet Harbison at her
Irish harp school
in Castelconnell, County Limerick.
RoJean organized a
group of her students, forming a harp circle that continues to expand and now
meets monthly in Salina, sharing new music, playing in ensemble, and providing
encouragement and support for each other. This group provided the nucleus for
benefit concerts for Hospice of Salina in 2006 and 2007, and performs at the
Smoky Hill River Festival
in Salina and the McPherson Scottish
Festival.
